Moving Done Got Easy, Y’all

Moving done got easy, y’all!

Seriously, we’re 47 days from leaving Alaska and there’s pretty much no pressure on moving stuff.

We’re not moving any furniture. No televisions. No tables. No chairs, no beds, no nightstands. Nada on the furniture front. It’s just way the hell too expensive and we’ve got family anxious to unload some furniture to us. So, we’ll start again on that end.

Sure, we’re shipping some clothes, some old photos, some keep sakes, and most of Kid A’s stuff. There’ll be a few boxes of irreplaceable items, a couple of boxes of print-only, work-related books, and a few other boxes of this n’ that… But no DVDs, no CDs, no game discs, no stereo equipment… Nothing like that.

Going digital has its advantages.

All our media is backed up and accessible on two separate hard drives. And they’re tiny. Books, movies, music, games… All that work-avoidance-behavior stuff? It’s all digital now. Work materials? Digital!

Bang! Mobility!

I remember George Carlin’s old bit about stuff, about having to move into bigger houses that’ll hold all your stuff… All that ever-increasing stuff… But we’re sort of getting past that curve now. We have more data, but far less stuff.

It’s liberating.

In some ways this move from Alaska to Georgia will be easier than when I moved from Florida to Oklahoma back in my college days. It’s good to let go of stuff — or to at least digitize it.
